Your relationship with yourself is the most important one that you have because it’s the foundation of all other relationships in your life. You talk to yourself before you talk to anyone else. You think about yourself before you think about others. And you treat yourself before you treat others in any type of way. That’s how being human works. If you want to be valued, respected, admired, or loved – the rest of the world takes its cue from you.
If you have relationships in your life that are less than satisfactory for you, the first place you need to look at is how your relationship with yourself is.
Are you in harmony with yourself?
Do you know yourself and what your triggers are? Do you knowingly put yourself in places you don’t want to be? How do you genuinely feel about yourself? Do you love your appearance? Can you lead yourself through difficult situations and come out better on the other end? Do you have strong self-respect and high self-esteem?
What you need to know
The people around us mirror how we feel about ourselves. Use your relationships with others as clues to show you how your internal relationship with yourself is. Before expecting the world to treat you with dignity, respect, integrity, and value – set the bar high by doing it yourself first. If you aren’t happy with the way you’re being treated, look within first at how you’re treating yourself. Chances are, you’re doing the exact same thing to yourself that others are doing to you.
How to change your relationship with yourself
Fall in love with yourself. Completely and totally. When you talk to yourself, do it like you’re talking to someone you love. Get to know yourself inside out and what your preferences are. Stop putting yourself in uncomfortable situations. Draw boundaries where you need to. Spend time alone with yourself. You are the most important person in your life. Give yourself the love, joy, attention and happiness you deserve.
